It was such an honour to host and judge the NZ round of the Madman (inter)National Cosplay Championship preliminary round at Overload this year.
A huge congratulations to all who entered (or even thought really seriously about entering – next time!!). It was great to have such a wide variety of skits: from a super cute and well choreographed dance number, to some highbrow comedy, a fight scene, a magical girl costume change skit, and also some meta crackiness!
I’ve been asked to say a few words about our winners, so here goes:
Third place winners ‘Team Iron Fist’ put two great costumes on stage. With harder punches and better pacing, any future fight skits will make them a force to be reckoned with.
‘Sewing All Night’ took out Second Place with their quick-change skit, and four damned near perfect costumes paired with a moving skit. It was so close between second and first! It was those tiny finishing details that made the difference.
Which brings me to the First Place winner, Sparky Cosplays will be representing NZ at the Madfest finals in Australia! Their impeccable craftsmanship is everything that I expect from NZ – and it was something that all three winning teams had in spades. I can’t wait to see what they add to their skit for the finals!
